Image of organizers for the 2016 Digital Media Academy, a two-week summer camp for girls entering sixth grade in which girls learned about creating videos and images for personal expression and solving community problems. Camp organizers simultaneously conducted academic research on issues regarding teaching digital skills, gender and cultural inclusivity in educational spaces, graduate student professional development, representation of girls and women in the media and in STEM fields, and how to conduct ethical community projects.

I’ve accumulated many skills and experiences, but here are the highlights:

  • Through earning a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, I developed expertise in teaching/learning, trauma-informed practices, research, writing, and critically analyzing whether systems are effective and equitable.

  • I’ve spent 9 years studying psychological trauma, trauma-informed practices, and translating those practices across diverse contexts through volunteer work; certification courses and workshops; creating new trauma-informed resources and training; research projects completed during graduate studies; and collaborative partnerships with colleagues in Social Work and Public Health.

  • I’ve got 10 years of experience managing departments, organizations, or programs. In many cases, my work involved managing staffs of more than 50 people, creating entirely new processes or programs to meet emerging organizational needs, overseeing professional development and mentoring, and running major events attended by more than 100 people.

  • I’ve been teaching writing since August 2013 in university and high school settings, focusing on research, business/technical, and personal writing and have received extensive training in teaching and learning from UofL. Student course evaluations and performance reviews by other English department colleagues consistently rate my teaching as “excellent,” and I won the 2015 Part-Time Lecturer of the Year Award.

  • I’m proficient in traditional research methods—such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, needs assessments, and transcription/coding—and transdisciplinary, community-engaged research across disciplines by participating in four engaged-research projects and a social justice research funding organization.

  • I’ve published a wide range of print, digital, and multimodal writing for academic and professional audiences and have given numerous workshops and conference presentations on diverse topics, from document design to trauma-informed practices to developing an online presence.
